Islam is a comprehensive religion comprising of an entire way of life. All aspects of life are governed by the religion of Allah. Otherwise there is fear of destruction and corruption. The term ‘credit crunch’, which we hear incessantly, refers to a sudden and dramatic shrinking of credit available throughout the world. This has had a profound effect on the economy and is causing great misery with the loss of jobs and collapse of businesses. From an Islamic perspective, the entire credit system was fatally flawed from the onset as it is based upon dishonesty, speculation, gambling and most critically greed and usury. The solution to this global economic decline can only be achieved by adhering to the concept and philosophy of wealth outlined in Islam. In the Islamic system, wealth is not a monopolised asset that only moves around a select few.
The current financial crisis as well as the Islamic perspective on the credit crunch all are eloquently explained in this speech. Reference is made to the mortgage and insurance system along with the philosophy of wealth in Islam.
Lecture delivered by Shaykh Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq on Sunday 25th January 2009 at the Abu Bakr Mosque, Southall, UK.
We often complain about the pathetic
situation of the Muslim ummah. We talk about the fitna, disharmony,
discord and strife within our households and communities. One of the
main causes of the current situation is that people have become very
judgmental due to which they do not hesitate in accusing others of all
kinds of things without ascertain the truth behind the matter. In fact,
the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم has compared accusation with killing
others, associating partners with Allah and disobedience of parents
because of common effects that are found in each of these activities.
Numerous verses of the Quran explicitly explain the necessity of
ascertaining the truth before making judgements. The punishment of one
who accuses someone without providing evidence is that his evidence is
never accepted in the court of law or in the court of Allah. Both his
dunya and akhira are affected. This talk elaborates, in detail, upon
this severe destructive sin.
The act of backbiting has been declared prohibited in Islam. This is the only religion which has declared it to be haram, however its nature is detested in all cultures. Yes, in this age, due to our pitiful state it is overlooked, but the word used to refere to the act 'backbiting' even in the English language, signifies its graveness. The Quran calls it cannibilism and the English language implies the same. The sin of backbiting is grave indeed and its consequences are very severe, yet we overlook or explain it away. Our excuses may appease those around us today but on the Day of Judgement we will be held to account. This talk explains what constitutes backbiting and what its consequences hold.
The passage of time leads a person towards good or evil. However, man remains in perpetual loss unless he utilises his time in good cause as Allah explains, ‘By time, man is in perpetual loss except for those people who believe and perform good actions.’ We suffer from procrastination. Even in deen we delay and postpone our actions in order to achieve more of the world. But who knows when death will strike when man then will plead before Allah for another opportunity but it would not come to any avail. Therefore prior to this regretful moment every given second should be spent in pleasing Allah. In this regard the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم has said, ‘Capitalize upon five things prior to the arrival of five.’ The commentary of this hadith goes into great detail in explaining these five aspects and how a person should appreciate and hasten towards them before the arrival of five regretful and distressing moments.
Unfortunately, we live in a time wherein delusion is very common and widespread. It has had an impact on our lives, our dealing with one another, our socialising with one another and most disturbing of all, our religion. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم advised, when you see four traits become common in the people concern yourself with yourself. From the four, one is that when every man capable of formulating an opinion is obsessed with his opionion, as this is a sign depicting the closeness of the Day of Judgement. This obsession stems from arrogance which leads to further delusion as one begins to hold all others in contempt. Verses of the Holy Quran make reference to this trait and these are commented upon with further relevance of how they are applicable today.
All over the globe one hears of Muslims suffering and being oppressed at the hands of tyrannical rulers and their allies, despite having control over the majority of the Worlds natural resources. An explanation of a hadeeth and its relation to the current day situation, where the noble Prophet prophesised how the nations will gather against the Muslims before the end of time makes up the opening part of this speech. Events in certain parts of the world are mentioned and the Muslims are reminded that we are not to despair, as Allah’s promise will reign supreme and His assistance is near.
In a hadeeth recorded by Imam Tirmidhi
related from Abu Hurairah رضى الله عنه he says thar Rasulullah صلى الله
عليه و سلم said 'A man is upon the deen of his friend, so one of you
should watch who he befriends'. We socialise with one another and
interact all day, yet how beneficial are our relationships with one
another or even how destructive. We learn from the Ahadeeth that even
animals have an effect on our attitude and style of life. Whether or
not we are practicing, the fact is, we are influenced by those around
us. As the saying goes 'show me your friends and I will tell you who
you are.' This talk elaborates on many verses and Ahadeeth wherein we
have been instructed on how we should be cautious when choosing our
friends, as Allah says in the Quran 'close friends will be enemies on
that day except those who have taqwa.'
Company, good or bad is so influencial, so effective that it can actually change and utterly transform a person’s life style, personality, perception, views, character and even behaviour. That’s why in choosing our friends we should be very wary. Rasulullah صلى الله عليه و سلم has advised, ‘That a person is upon the religion of his/her companion. Therefore one should choose his/her companion.’ In this day and age we fail to recognise the significance and impact of company. We are unaware that company can either destroy or reform a person’s life. People go to an extent of given up their religion because of company. Staying aloof from such company is compulsory. Regarding this Rasulullah صلى الله عليه و سلم has advised, ‘Solitude is better than bad company and good company is better than solitude.’ What is the definition of good and bad company and how do we conduct our self in regards to these? This is discussed in detail within this speech
The Holy Quran relates the remarkable story
of Isa pbuh and his mother in surah Maryam. The Miraculous nature
of Isa pbuhconception and birth together with certain aspects of
his life were misinterpreted, misquoted and exaggerated so as to give
rise to a New World religion based on the mistaken ideology of the
"Holy Trinity" that forms the basis of Christianity. The simple truth
is that Allah is One the All Knowing. He begets not nor is He begotten.
All things are created by Him and submit to Him alone. This elopquent
commentry dispels the confusion surrounding Isa pbuh as well as
presenting the Islamic perspective on this noble Prophet of Allah.
pbuh = peace be upon him
