The personality and character of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam constituted a model example for Muslims. His life is a practical guidance and inspiration for them. Therefore Muslim scholars have taken pains to preserve all relevant material about the life and career of the Prophet of Islam sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam.

Imam Tirmizi's well known collection on the Shamaa'il (Habits & Traits of the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam) has been one of the basic and popular sources on the subject. It has been translated into several languages of the world including English. Imam Abu Isa Tirmizi has collected original material reported on the authority of the Companions of the Holy Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam himself. It has always been considered to be one of the primary sources of the personality and character of the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam of Islam and has always served as a text-book and an enrichment material for Muslim students.

The present English translation is based on the Urdu version prepared alongwith minor explanatory notes by the Late Great Scholar of Hadith, Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyya.

Translated by Prof. Murtaza Hussain F. Qurashi
